John Reiach, aged fifty, stands in a family group with his three surviving children: twelve-year-old Elizabeth (also standing), seventeen-year-old Margaret, and John, aged twenty. The older woman in their midst is Isabella Reiach Corner, his sister-in-law and the children's aunt (Auntie Bella). She was the younger sister of their dead mother, Margaret Telfer Corner. The latter had died of fever after the birth of her seventh child, Mary, in 1866. (Mary followed her to the grave seven months later, dying of pneumonia.)
All, except John for some reason, appear in this photograph to be dressed in mourning, probably because earlier in this same year they had lost another close family member: Isabella's brother and the children's uncle, Edward Corner, who had lived in the family home for many years. He had died in March 1876 at the age of thirty-one of scarlatina.
